Thatcher, Margaret
- An English political leader of the twentieth century, who became prime minister of Britain in 1979. A member of the Conservative party ( Tories ), Thatcher stressed private enterprise and attacked socialism and the welfare state (see also welfare state ). She resigned from office in 1990.
